The Walls of Intramuros

Intramuros is one of the many historic landmarks in the Philippines. It used to be a walled city during the Spanish Era however got destroyed during previous wars. Nowadays renovations are being made to restore this wonderful relic.

Today, my girlfriend and I decided to spend the Valentines’ on a unique holiday trip. Instead of going to fancy restaurants or romantic parks, we instead head of to a historical site: we visited the famous walls of Intramuros. I was a bit excited on this as I have never been to Intramuros before. I have only been acquainted of this place from TV shows or magazines however today, we will go and witness for ourselves the fascinating ruins and enjoy a thrill ride on trains and jeepneys going there.

It was a hot Valentines’ Day morning. Lucky for us, we were able to set out our day-off’s on this day. So we were all set and ready to go, my girlfriends’ going to be my guide since I’ve never been to this place and she’s more familiar going there than I would ever be. First thing that we did was buying a good camera, she was eying on a Canon Ixus 132 since a few months ago so that day she bought one at SM Aura before we flew.

How to get to Intramuros

From Makati Ayala, you can take the MRT Ayala station going to TAFT, and then at the side of Metropoint Mall, you will see the LRT 1 Taft station then drop off at Central Terminal. From the terminal follow the LRT 1 along A. Villegas until Natividad Almeda-Lopez (two blocks away from the Terminal). You will see the Manila City Hall, walk past the City Hall towards Padre Burgos, which is one block away. Cross Padre Burgos by taking the underpass walkway. Once you’re on the other side of the road, you will see a line of Pedicab drivers that you can pay for a tour inside Intramuros, or you can just walk a little and you will see the entrance with a Sign “Intramuros”. Just follow the street where students are coming from, you won’t be lost. Once you’re inside, you will right away see the Walls of Intramuros on the right side. Follow the walls and it will lead you to the heart of the City. Need not to worry of being lost, you can just ask anybody or the friendly Guardia Sibil for directions.

What’s in it for me

There are a lot of sites to see here, especially if you’re the kind of person fascinated in historial landmarks, I know I enjoyed it, watching the past put a blast on you with these historic relics. Another thing is a good walk up the stone walls, the pathways connects to other historical landmarks in the place. While walking you’ll get pass some of the few known Universities and schools surrounding the area.
